Changing your Multi-Pass PIN

Changing your Multi-Pass PIN

Introduction

Reasons for Multi-Pass Biometric Failure

Once you have registered your biometrics on the Multi-Pass, the first thing you must do is change your default PIN.

This PIN will enable authentication if biometric authentication fails. This can occur in certain situation identified below:

Any sweat or liquid on your finger can interfere with the scan. Ensure you wipe both your finger and the biometrics sensor.
They should be completely dry before using the Multi-Pass.

Improper biometrics registration can cause the authentication process to be ineffective. During the registration process, make sure you place your finger around in slightly different positions to ensure that the entire surface gets scanned.

Not touching the sensor fully during authentication can cause the authentication to fail. Ensure your finger touches the biometrics sensor on the Multi-Pass.

Although biometrics authentication is actioned quickly, you should still refrain from lifting your finger too quickly.

Try to keep your finger in one place when you’re authenticating — you don’t want to move your finger around too much.

Multi-Pass Dos and Don'ts

Ensure you hold your finger on top of the sensor as indicated below:

  • Make sure to fully cover the sensor

  • Applying a consistent amount of pressure on the sensor will help the biometrics authentication process

Important note:
There is a maximum amount of PIN retries, if you have reached the max, your card will be locked and a full card reset will be required by your admin.

This article will cover the steps required to change your default PIN on your Multi-Pass. Windows Hello tools will be used to enable this change. Please ensure you have your default PIN with you before starting the process.

Steps to Change your Multi-Pass PIN

Step 1.

Using your Windows search function, type “security key” on the search tool.

Step 2.

Select the “Set up security key“ option.

Step 3.

On the right-hand side, you’ll notice a section for “Security Key”. Expand this section and select “Manage“.

(Note: You can also access this option by navigating to the following path:

Windows > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Security Key > Manage)

Step 4.

A prompt will appear asking to “Tap your security key on the reader…”. At this point, hold your Multi-Pass with your finger on the biometrics sensor and tap your Multi-Pass on your reader. Ensure you keep holding the card on the reader until Windows displays the option to update the PIN (approx. 6+ seconds).

Step 5.

Once the prompt to change the Security Key PIN appears, leave the card on the reader (for convenience), and remove your finger from the biometrics sensor. At this point, select “change” security key PIN option.

Note: if you remove the card from the reader, you will be asked to tap the card once again after the PIN has been changed.

Step 6.

A new prompt will appear. Enter your old PIN, your new PIN and select OK. The PIN can be alphanumeric and can include basic special characters (e.g. !@#$%?&*()^~) and must be between 4-63 characters inclusively.

Step 7.

Once you’ve selected “OK” or hit “Enter”, Windows will try to set the new PIN on your Multi-Pass. If your Multi-Pass is still connected to your reader, the PIN change will happen simultaneously. Otherwise, you will be asked to “Tap your security key again on the reader” to set the PIN.

Congratulation! You have successfully changed your default PIN on your Multi-Pass! You can now register your Multi-Pass as a sign-in method in Windows (see next section).
